Hello Bluesky 👋🏻
I've been lurking around for a few months now, but figured it's finally time for a proper intro. So: hi, I'm Alex!
I'm a researcher in astrophysics, and I specialize in galaxy hunting 🌌 Outside of that, you'll typically find me running or baking (usually one after the other).
This morning Minneapolis woke up to a sundog ❄️☀️🌈 One of the coolest perks of cold cold winters!

One of my favorite things about fall in the Midwest is watching those huge groups of crows gather in huge swirling flocks 🐦‍⬛🌀
But I've been wondering. Bird community: anyone knows why they do this?

If you live in the Northern hemisphere, keep an eye on the sky tomorrow night 🌌👀
SWPC has only ever issued a handful of G4 watches, and we have now for Nov 12 due to three incoming CMEs. Storming may begin on Nov 11 with the impact of the first CME with two more close behind it.

If the forecast verifies, much of the U.S. may see the aurora Tue/Wed nights.

If you've got a few minutes, Zooniverse has a project mapping road damage from Hurricane Melissa to support humanitarian work in the Caribbean ❤️‍🩹 The project is almost done but needs a few extra classifications - and *you* can help here:

Aaand, the dataset for Hubble observations of LaCOS galaxies is now public! 🌌 This was two years in the making, and honestly a great fun to lead the data reduction. Much more science will come out of these observations: stay tuned 💫
New HLSP: LACOS = Layman-Alpha and Continuum Origins Survey! Data from HST of 42 low redshift compact, star forming galaxies. Reduced images of each filter, Lyman-alpha line and continuum maps, general properties catalog, and a preview RGB composite for each target. 🔭 archive.stsci.edu/hlsp/lacos

This week I unlocked the best work view I'll ever have. It's all downhill from here.
