On this day - which will be remembered a century from now as a day of unvarnished, aggressive & blatant racism - I was encouraged and fortified by a generous email from a self-described "WASP from Pittsburgh" who had just finished reading my "Joy Goddess: A'Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance."

What do you hope readers take away from A'Lelia's life?
April 19, 2025 at 9:06 PM
You frame her ability to bring people together for parties, salons, and other events as "her talent and her gift." Why do you think this was important?
April 19, 2025 at 9:06 PM
Tell me about your desire to correct the historical record about her.
April 19, 2025 at 9:05 PM
How did you first become interested in A'Lelia's story?

What a joy to speak w/ @publisherswkly.bsky.social
about why I wrote "Joy Goddess" about my great-grandmother and how I draw parallels between the Harlem Renaissance creatives and the irrepressible urge to create now despite the backlash to our gifts and our words. My answers in the thread below.

4 of 9 I think now what an inspiration it would have been for me as the only little Black girl in my 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade classes to have seen someone who looked like me in a book.

2 of 9 I was drawn to stories about women like author Louisa May Alcott, aviator Amelia Earhart, doctor Elizabeth Blackwell and Helen Keller. I must have run out of books about women, so I even read about Notre Dame’s coach Knute Rockne.
But who I didn’t read about was Black people...

Day 3 BHM2025
1 of 9 The publication of Joy Goddess: A’Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance on June 10th marks my fifth biography, but my fascination w/ the genre began in elementary school during the late 1950s when I read several books in Bobbs-Merrill's Childhood of Famous Americans series
