Now, of course the people controlling the server could be compromised or bad actors, but with that level of mistrust you shouldn't access the internet at all, ever. It's just not practical to live that way.

Not really, unless you visit sites or use apps that don't implement TLS encryption (Signal does). With TLS, not even your internet service provider can read packets traveling between your network and a server. It only knows that you connected to that server.

That's not what you originally said, though. You said privacy is gone the moment you use the internet, which is not necessarily true. Mobile keyboard telemetry is a different issue.

Privacy and anonymity aren't the same thing: I can know *who* is communicating in an end-to-end-encrypted channel, but I won't know *what* they're saying thanks to TLS and Diffie-Hellman.
