More recently, I realy got into Stardew Valley. The book really captures beautifully the soothing effect of letting yourself loose in this alternative, simpler and friendlier reality

The first thing that my wife and I bought together was a vintage SNES console during the 1st year of our PhD. I remember that my Summer's objective was to master Stokey & Lucas and finish Super Mario World. Only one of those was achieved...

I knew the most english among my friends, and remember all the effort it took for us to answer correctly the 5 multiple choice questions to show that we were 18 y.o. to be able to play Leisure Suit Larry before we discovered the ALT+X shortcut 😅

at a deeper level it also made think about the important role that games (video and board) have played in my life. One of my fondest childhood memories is playing Civilization with my dad for hours on end. I loved history before, but Civi supercharged this passion

Just finished Gabrielle Zevin's 'Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow' and absolutely loved it! It resonated with me on so many levels. First, loved the references to so many games I grew up with: arcade Donkey Kong, Leisure Suit Larry, King's Quest and, of course, Oregon Trail 🦬

R.I.P. David Lodge -- the best satyrist of academia I've ever read. Still very grateful to @upanizza.bsky.social for having introduced me to his work many years ago...

Last but not least... Chinese pure exporters (a topic close to my heart). Ceramics made in China in a design not used for local consumption but in high demand in Iran

One of my favourites -- a clear 😉 example of intra-industry trade -- glass containers found in Samarra (Irak). Some of these are imported from Greece, but some were made there to be exported to other parts of the Caliphate.

These necklaces were made in Egypt using materials from Scandinavia, Iran, Madagascar and Indonesia! 😲

These jewels were found in England (Sutton Hoo). They were made with techniques developed in the Caucasus, using materials sourced from as far away as Sri Lanka and Bohemia

I came across this book on the history of travels to Mongolia in the XIII century when I was 15 or so, and completely blew my mind awakening a fascination for the history of Central Asia that continues to this day. After many years, I finally managed to find it again! 😀
