Anyway, now I appreciate how the movie works, but I have to treat them as totally independent experiences.
And the experience of the movie just doesn’t resonate to me the way the experience of the book does.

When I saw the movie as a teen, I didn’t have the context to understand how the tongue-in-cheek humor served the same role.
It felt like the movie was making fun of the book, which was very offensive to my autistic teen brain, because it was Serious Literature to me.
