I asked for like a dozen extensions during my graduate degree and not once was I shot down, shamed, etc. My profs were 100% like “yeah that’s cool, let me know if you need any help” or whatever. But if they had had negative reactions, your point would still stand.

One time, Michele Bachmann visited my elementary school in Anoka County and she said the name of our school wrong. I was not a politically aware child at the time (4th grade??), but just from that little thing, I knew in my heart she was bad news.
