With the holidays upon us, it's easy to default to giving the tech gifts that retailers tend to push on us this time of year:
smart speakers, video doorbells, bluetooth trackers, fitness trackers, and other connected gadgets are all very popular gifts.
But before you give one, think twice about […]

Thing I discovered the name for today.

The Matilda Effect.

"... bias against acknowledging the achievements of women scientists and inventors, whose work is consequently attributed to their male colleagues. "

Let's have no more of this horseshit!

But of course we will because men are too […]

I have started publishing a bi-monthly security newsletter for Australians on Substack.

Please note: It's designed for peeps with more limited technical experience than most folks here.

This is the latest.

Fucking Spotify just suggested I listen to Christmas music.

There is only one Xmas song that should be played at this time of year

As a Brit initially educated in computer science in the late 1970's how come I've never heard of Dina St Johnston?

I think rhe M4 macro processor is the most underrated program in the last 40 years.

Anyone care to offer a counter example?

I'm staying in a 5th floor flat and we just had a 5.3 earthquake 130km away.

Made things wobble a bit and me very nervous.

So after many months I've managed to get another post out on my technical blog. This one is about #tmux and the package manager.

https://alecthegeek.gitlab.io/blog/2025/08/xdg-and-tmux-plugins/

Ironic, I wrote it last year and no longer use Tmux.

Writing a book using #asciidoctor ?

This is how you switch off running headers on chapter title pages (only took me three weeks to work out!). NB Calling super 1st is important.

I've been using Addy.io as an anon email forwarder for some time. However it's a bit hard for my students (local seniors) to use,

Just discovered the Duck Duck "email protection" service, seems much simpler to use.

Any feedback?

#CyberSecurity

Fun Fact. You can change your DOB on your Google account to improve your personal security. (your accounts can be linked via your DOB).

Hurry up, because I am guessing that new AU "security" regulation this year will make it harder.

Remember to save the incorrect DOB in your […]

I am trying to close my #QantasAirways account after recent data breach. They don't make it easy.

Plus the account security is very poor. The use SMS 2FA in some places and Auth App TOTP in others (if you enable it).

Just read this article on the AU Gov age verification trial for social media (laws coming in to keep under 16 off social media).

Scant on details and full of equivocation. I am not confident they can make this work.

Over the last 12 months I have been helping local seniors with #CyberSecurity

It's shameful how hard *we have made it for everyone to be safe online.

I'm not even asking for privacy here, just basic financial and account security.

I feel ashamed.
