Watches movies. Sometimes. Gets tired other times.
I’ve been into the Oscars for almost two decades (yikes!) I genuinely think this is the first time I was certain of a winner in September
BEST FILM: One Battle After Another

This is the One Battle guy I would most love to see pick up his second trophy actually
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Benicio del Toro, One Battle After Another

The Mayor’s salary is more than fine. I think it’s a pretty convincing argument that you need to pay cops less, not more to the Mayor.
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

Diane Keaton was such a singular talent because you could say she gave the greatest comedic performance by an American actress (Annie Hall) and you’d be right. And you could say she gave the greatest dramatic performance by an American actress (Reds) and you’d also be right.
There are so many Diane Keaton performances to remember, but a lot of people haven't seen Reds, and A) my God, see it, it is a masterpiece and B) her performance as Louise Bryant is one of the bravest, toughest, least sympathy-courting pieces of work by an American actress in the last 50 years.

Co-workers today were talking about Kirk as a nice guy who simply went to schools to talk about his faith and hold debates so good job there Ezra

After watching Moulin Rouge! my boyfriend started reading about it and went “Baz Luhrmann isn’t gay?!!?”

Kinda wild to think that a few years earlier with the Stunt category and Everything Everywhere All At Once would have won 8 Oscars out of 12 categories

There’s this dude at my gym who does power lifts and he screams. Very loudly. Everyone with headphones can hear him clearly. It’s kinda annoying tbh

But also quite funny because he’s not even doing it with that much weight.

I see people complain that a plot hole is how the White Lotus franchise can deal with three murders at their different locations and omg grow up

Was a bit confused about the season but knew to hold off judgment until the ending, so it was incredibly rewarding to see all the pieces fully fall into place (satisfyingly and not!) in that final hour. Good season.

I for one am actually quite pleased seeing Mike White doing the thing where he allows himself to dig deeper into the Mike White-ness of it all the longer and bigger his show gets.

Not feeling it, and sadly think Leo is a big part of it. Has he lost his spark? Has he gotten too comfortable in a type of role and acting? I genuinely loved him for most of last decade but haven't been sold on him since Wolf of Wall Street, which was coincidentally, his best.

Went to see Black Bag and omg a real movie! For adults! In cinemas! In spring! What a time to be alive! And to think Soderbergh probably made it in two days and a half. What a blessing

A few years ago decided to do a proper deep dive into his filmography since it felt I didn’t hear much outside of the two biggies and was so surprised at how stacked it was and how wild it is that it’s not brought up more often with Tarantino, Mann or other of his contemporaries.

Now this one though. This one we’re in crisis mode. The winners *and* the nominees lately have been…well, not great Bob!

Youn carrying the category on her shoulders this decade.
If this decade's Best Supporting Actress winners were in the same category, who would get your vote?

Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once
Ariana DeBose – West Side Story
Da'Vine Joy Randolph – The Holdovers
Zoe Saldaña – Emilia Pérez
Youn Yuh-jung – Minari

This category had been in a real rut over the past two decades with a lazy focus in real life roles and prosthetics (we’re still not completely safe). So it’s refreshing to see not only the marked improvement but an honestly great run here with 3 fantastic choices and a pretty decent one!
If this decade's Best Actor winners were in the same category, who would get your vote?

Adrien Brody – The Brutalist
Brendan Fraser – The Whale
Anthony Hopkins – The Father
Cillian Murphy – Oppenheimer
Will Smith – King Richard

Find it very telling how for better or worse, the Anora team thanked and mentioned the sex worker community (more than once!) but the Emilia Pérez team didn’t for the Mexican or (especially) queer and trans communities.

There was extra attention paid to some of the crafts categories and I for one thought that was a lovely touch to the ceremony. More of that in years to come!

I know there’s a room of Netflix executives right now PISSED at Karla for costing them that Oscar
March 3, 2025 at 3:08 AM
Not to be a debbie downer but we really don’t need a Bond tribute at the Oscars every 10 years. Especially in a year as random as this!

Watched Mulholland Dr. for the first time in over a decade. Incredible. That it exists is incredible. That someone had the vision to put *that* on screen is incredible. With time and now repeated viewings, the mere experience of watching it is incredible. Thank you, David.

I think Jane Fonda is like the best famous person. Some close runner ups but she always takes it.
February 24, 2025 at 2:12 AM
Adrien Brody is quite excellent in The Brutalist indeed, he'd be among the better winners we've had in some time and a highlight of that group but I can muster basically no excitement when he already has one and unrewarded Ralph Fiennes and Colman Domingo (also better perf) are also right there!

My column this week is about NO OTHER LAND, a must-see Oscar nominee that every U.S. studio is too afraid to touch: www.nytimes.com/2025/02/19/m...
“No Other Land” Is the Oscar-Nominated Film That No Studio Will Touch (Gift Article)
“No Other Land,” about the destruction of a village in the occupied West Bank, is one of the year’s most acclaimed films. Still, U.S. studios are unwilling to distribute it.

I'm not saying I want this to happen but it'd be quite amusing if Adrien Brody won all the awards he didn't for The Pianist (GG, BAFTA, SAG, Critic's) and then lose the one he did win: Oscar
