A mediator, then, must complete something of a surgical task: a safe and skillful detonation, which neither suppresses nor escalates the conflict. Some conflict is necessary and unavoidable, it appears, in search of the "new" that emerges from polarities.

This definition is crucial, as it avoids the dangers of "suppression" and "conciliation" - which includes placating (the event, the person) and peace measures that amount to a concession of any justice for victims of crime.
