The afterglow of Alisaie’s spell still flickered in Aldra’s vision, a pale wound of light. She sat rigid on the bench, breath unsteady, heart stretched painfully between relief and grief. Y’shtola’s warmth—once so close, so consuming—had been torn from her in an instant, leaving an ache that hollowed her chest. Her hands trembled. “Why… why does it hurt like this?” she whispered. Alisaie knelt before her, clasping Aldra’s shaking hands in her own. “Because she made it hurt,” she said softly, though fire burned in her eyes. “She’s been twisting your heart, bending your feelings, weaving herself so deeply into you that you can’t see the seams.” Aldra shook her head, tears shimmering. “But… I wanted it. I let her—” Her voice cracked as memories—whispers, spells, heat—rose unbidden. She turned away. “You wanted love,” Alisaie corrected gently. “And she gave you something that mimicked it. That isn’t your fault. You trusted her, and she used that trust to bind you.” Aldra’s chest tightened, torn between the lingering warmth of Y’shtola’s touch and the cold clarity of Alisaie’s words. “Come,” Alisaie urged, rising and pulling Aldra to her feet. “We can’t stay here. She’ll come for you again. We need distance—somewhere safe. Gridania. The Twelveswood will hide us long enough for you to understand what she’s done.” Aldra hesitated, every step fighting her, as though her body itself resisted leaving. Y’shtola’s voice, her certainty, her embrace tugged at her like a chain. But Alisaie’s grip was steady, grounding, drawing her forward. They slipped into the night—lanternlight fading into shadow, the city’s neon gleam retreating behind them while the forest waited ahead, deep and quiet. Aldra looked back once, heart trembling, caught between the comfort of the bond she had surrendered to and the truth Alisaie promised. And far away, rising from the cold waters of Outer La Noscea, Y’shtola emerged—gown clinging, eyes blazing with fury and resolve.

Aldra sat in the lantern’s glow, her confusion thick as fog, when Y’shtola finally stepped closer to Aldra. Her eyes were steady, her hand already reaching, poised to draw Aldra back into the comfort of her presence. But before her touch could land, the air split with sudden brilliance. A circle of white and sapphire light spiraled beneath her feet, Alisaie’s sigils, sharp and purposeful. Y’shtola’s eyes widened, but there was no time to counter. In an instant, her body was wrenched away, the world collapsing into a rush of magic. The next moment, she was gone. The air on the bench crackled with fading light, the space where she stood now empty. Far from the city, in the dead stillness of Outer La Noscea, the spell snapped open. Y’shtola staggered, her boots splashing into the chill waters of a lonely lake, its moonlit surface disturbed by her sudden arrival. The night was quiet save for the echo of water lapping against stone. Alone. Back on the bench, Aldra gasped, eyes wide with shock. “Alisaie, what did you do?” she whispered. From the shadows beyond the lanternlight, Alisaie stepped forward, her jaw set. “I did what had to be done. She’s too close, Aldra. Too dangerous. You can’t see it yet, but I won’t let her keep pulling you deeper.” Aldra’s chest tightened, torn between fear, longing, and the ache of what had just been ripped away. Somewhere far from her, Y’shtola’s fury simmered beneath the cold waters of the lake, and when she returned, as Alisaie knew she would, the storm between them would break.
