Spectacular migration for the UK white storks this year! This stork, born at Knepp this year, is offspring of flightless parents and migrated around the Alps following a Southeastern migration route @ueaceec.bsky.social @ueaenv.bsky.social

We recently tagged @whitestorkproject.bsky.social juveniles to enable us to determine their movements and migration. These are offspring of flightless white storks that build ground nests @kneppwilding.bsky.social. Looking forward to following their movements whitestorkproject.org/our-storks/.

White stork nests can host several other species. In this case only Spanish sparrows-Passer hispaniolensis. More than 10 nests are visible. Also spotless starlings and common sparrows can use white stork nests @birdsmove.bsky.social @ueaceec.bsky.social @ueaenv.bsky.social

How do birds cope with extreme weather? When temperatures are high (e.g 39C last week) white stork parents stay at the nest and shade their young. @ueaceec.bsky.social @birdsmove.bsky.social @ueaenv.bsky.social

Thousands of storks at this landfill site in Morocco, including many with rings from several EU contries. Landfill sites, just like bird feeders or vulture feeding stations provide resources for several bird species (e.g. white storks, several gull species and egrets). @ueaceec.bsky.social
