Rex stopped and almost tripped over herself as she came into a clearing. The grass was long, but there were patches where someone (or something) had clearly slept. Directly in the middle, two figures stood. They were male, and just as naked as her, but the primary difference is that their heads were that of wolves instead of people. One had white fur, the other black.

Suddenly there were fingers delicately touching her face, beckoning her to look up. She met those green eyes, which held nothing but jubilance. “None but the Fae King.” He whispered. “My dear child, blessed little Rex. You are one of the few I truly adore, for your struggle is an entertaining one. You should be proud. It takes a lot to entertain me.” Without warning, his lips graced her forehead affectionately. Rex couldn’t object. She didn’t have the will to object. Despite knowing interactions with the fae were risky at best and dangerous at worst, the gentle handling was something she couldn’t pull away from. Not right now.

I recognize it’s strange to take such comfort in your enemy’s signs of life, especially back then. One day, Dismas would decide he had gotten tired of waiting for me to realize my full potential, and he’d kill me. I knew that, yet… Every time I told myself that, it felt like the idea mattered less. And, the attitude then became ‘so what?’ If I didn’t realize my full potential, I’d be better off dead anyways. That’s what the ‘so what?’ eventually became.

“Perhaps you shouldn’t run off without pants.” A deep voice from behind Rex caused her to jump. How Dismas still managed to sneak up on her was a mystery at this point, but his words had her blood running cold. “AH!” She looked down and immediately dropped both Merp (who loudly protested) and her sword to cover herself with her hands. Her pants appeared in her periphery and she had never stepped into a pant leg faster in her life. As she turned to look at Dismas, he had already made himself decent, which included the wolf mask. His perceptiveness amazed her.

She spent a moment staring into the river, and at her own face. It felt both like a century had passed since Dismas had taken yet another breath long after his chest had stopped moving, but it also felt like yesterday. Thinking about the moment she had struck the killing blow still haunted her, much like the moments after where she stared at a corpse that had once been her greatest enemy and her closest friend.
