We found that early low flows and non-native fish had additive, but not synergistic effects on stream insect emergence. Low flows shifted community structure, and brown trout increased the emergence of small-sized groups - and benthic algal biomass!

We subjected stream channels to future low-snowpack & early snowmelt scenarios, and to presence of brown trout, a global invader. We tracked dynamics of emerging insects—a key linkage connecting streams to the adjacent terrestrial environment

Stream Channels - One of the most unique features of SNARL is the experimental stream channel system. The original channels were established by US Fish and Wildlife researchers in the 1940’s and divided Convict creek into four sections up to 400 meters in length, with individual water-control structures and moveable fish barriers. An array of new experimental stream channels was built in the 1990’s, and consisted of nine identical stream sections, with identical patterns of riffles, pools, and meanders. Each channel is one meter wide and 50 meters long, with natural sediments and cobbles laid over a rigid concrete base. The new channels provide researchers with statistically meaningful replicates for controlled comparative studies. In addition to the experimental channels and divided stream sections, researchers have access to stretches of Convict Creek above and below the reserve, and to small channels flowing through the aquatic laboratory. Perimeter to Area (P/A) ratios, and association between P/A ratios and areas, across a range of ecosystem types. (A) P/A ratios of 6 intermittent stream pools in our study area (Chalone Creek watershed, Pinnacles National Park, California), visited during the wet and dry seasons. We also show literature P/A values for oceanic islands (n=19; Polis et al. 1998), vernal pools (n=34; Brooks and Hayashi 2002), and a global data set on lakes (n=1,420,891; Messager et al. 2016). All P/A ratios are in km/km2, following Polis’ et al. 1998 convention, for the sake of comparison. (B) Relationship between ecosystem surface areas (log km2) and P/A ratios across ecosystem types, showing that intermittent stream pools are substantially smaller and have much higher P/A ratios (5-to-350 fold) than any other ecosystem type considered here, particularly during their dry phase.
