Arquitectura, esdevenir i estudis catalans En reconeixement de la designació de Barcelona per part de la UNESCO com a Capital Mundial de l’Arquitectura 2026, la North American Catalan Society dedicarà el seu 5è Seminari d’Estiu a l’arquitectura. Fent-nos ressò del tema proposat pel Congrés Mundial de la Unió Internacional d’Arquitectes, "Esdevenir: Arquitectures per a un Planeta en Transició", que també tindrà lloc a Barcelona el 2026, convidem propostes que explorin les interseccions entre l’arquitectura i els estudis catalans. Ens interessen especialment contribucions que abordin críticament els sis eixos temàtics del Congrés de la UIA: “becoming beyond-human, attuned, embodied, interdependent, hyper-conscious, circular.” Els temes poden incloure (entre d’altres): arquitectura i pensament ecològic; territoris urbans i rurals, locals i globals; el paper de l’espai construït en la llengua, la literatura i les polítiques identitàries catalanes; processos d’esdevenir i circularitat en l’espai i el temps arquitectònics i literaris; i les dimensions cíviques, artístiques o simbòliques de l’urbanisme i l’arquitectura catalanes. En un document separat, envieu el nom, títol del paper i la vostra afiliació. El resum ha de ser anònim ja que passa per un procés de revisió per parells. Rebreu una resolució abans de la darrera setmana de març. PREMI DE LA NORTH AMERICAN CATALAN SOCIETY (NACS) PER UN TREBALL D’EXCEL·LÈNCIA EN EL CAMP DELS ESTUDIS CATALANS BASES 1) L’objectiu del premi és atorgar un reconeixement a estudis de catalanística realitzats per estudiosos vinculats professionalment a institucions acadèmiques i de recerca de NordAmèrica, que constitueixin aportacions rigoroses i de qualitat en aquest camp. 2) Poden optar al premi aquells treballs publicats entre l’u de gener de 2024 i l’u de desembre de 2025. 3) Els treballs han d’estar publicats en el moment de la seva nominació. No es podran nominar aquells treballs només acceptats per a publicació. 4) La nominació dels treballs és lliure. Popular songs in Castilian were all the rage. The split between speaking Catalan en famille and writing in Castilian for public affairs was sharper and more complete. Never was Catalan as close to being abandoned as it was in the early nineteenth century? Language abandonment is precisely what happened in Ireland during the nineteenth century, particularly after the famine of 1848 and the waves of outmigration that followed, to the point that at present only 1 percent of the population speaks Irish. The Irish have not lost their sense of national identity, however, because nationalism does not depend on language distinction.

Analogy is a weak instrument of historical thinking.

Yet I have long believed that analogy, with its tendency to transfer insights from one domain to another without demonstrating the validity of the transference, is not a useful historiographical method. Precisely because analogy promises so much more than it delivers, both conceptually and theoretically, it is more often than not a weak instrument of historical thinking, generating similarities where comparisons and contrasts are more apt and, in its tendency to slip into genealogy, arguing on behalf of false continuities and/or legacies. Linguistically and rhetorically, analogy is akin to metaphor in that, like metaphor, it promotes a whole/whole substitution that decontextualizes both parts of the equation and leaves little room for the kind of interpretive operations that properly govern historical investigation. When we indulge in analogies, either by operationalizing them ourselves, as in the case of claiming the relevance of the Inquisition and invoking the Crusades, or by reifying such analogies, as in the work of the neomedievalists, we open the way for a kind of thinking that becomes self-validating and thereby resists criticism.
