think the Netherlands or Italy, 2 countries that are less powerful than their neighbors and not as populous, will give up their sovereignty to compete with China and the US? For what?
It's just not in their interest.

This is why I don't see the EU as a serious competitor, because yes, it's a union of strong economies but it's a union of different interests each of which wants to go in a different direction.
If the EU were to federalize then sure, we could see a real competitor to China and the US but do you 2/4

ASML is a Dutch company before its a EU company. The Dutch have more influence than any other EU country and if France and the Netherlands disagree on a particular geopolitical policy related to ASML, ASML will likely do what the Dutch want. Do you think France will be happy with this?

GDP nominal is a horrendous way to compare countries, especially China as they purposely devalue their currency and manufacturers most of their stuff so they don't import as much.
GDP PPP is a bit better but also flawed, the point is if this is all you look at you miss the bigger picture

I was thinking about it from a technological/economic/geopolitical viewpoint.
American society itself is decaying, but it's still significant in those three areas that its enough to remain significant for the next 50 years.
Europe does have stronger Democratic institutions, there's no denying that.

Honestly I just think about how this is going to raise rent prices.
It won't be good for the city unless they can magically create a bunch of new housing which is obviously not possible in a short period of time.

As much as I would love to agree unfortunately even a decaying United States will be far more relevant than a decaying Europe, at least for the next 50 years.
