As various emails come to the surface I am thinking with care about SA survivors who are waking up to evidence of truths long understood but hidden. May the coming days of emotion bring with them, ultimately, some justice.

Last night, my mom, a retired English teacher, and I had a lively discussion about this poem by a famous poet that she’d never heard of:

So, I’ve never heard anyone describe the experience of transporting a cat on a long plane trip. First trip went fine. Yesterday’s trip, not as fine.

Let’s just say the layover was messy, and neither of us were a fan of showering together after arriving. But we survived and are still friends.

Gorgeous day for a hike. Decided against going up this mountain with the white stuff, but made it around the loop.

I love that I can sprinkle some (old) turnip seeds in the loose dirt and a few months later—voila. Grateful for the gifts of the soil, sun, water.

Yesterday I drove through the beginning of monsoon season in the desert. Lightning, thunder, pouring down rain after I left my youngest at college and headed back to the airport. Weather felt emblematic of the transition.

First day empty nesting today, spent on a hillside picking blueberries.

My heart is full. A wonderful weekend outside, walking, hiking, with friends and family. And the frosting is that the turning point to berry season is here! In a month, I might be tired of it, but for now, I look forward to many hours of meditative calm as I pick many kinds of berries.

My youngest recently told me I needed to finish reading Desert Solitaire. Told him, I don’t dare do that right now. After I started it, I applied to volunteer on trail crew. If I finish it right now, I might not be able to help the kids through college! 😂

That said, here is some lichen.

A friend on SPI pointed out this book when I arrived to work and had more colonialist perspective books in hand that they disliked. If you can get your hands on a copy of it, it will be eye-opening indeed.

From a friend my age, created to generate discussion with our young adult kids. Specifically designed to clarify the word “situationship,” which I just learned is a well-understood term amongst the kids….learn something new everyday.

Entertaining, to say the least.

Can’t believe it took me 15 years to get out to Rabbit Lake. Glad I got to take my college bestie.
