Downtown New York has hosted generations of underground cultural communities, providing a vibrant home for drag queens, theater performers, filmmakers, and outcasts. Many of these objects memorialize losses he has experienced-some due to street violence against queer folks, others due to federally sanctioned negligence during the AIDS crisis. "It's really ancestor worship, my gratitude for all these people who came through my life," Machado has explained.

A canvas patterned in the style of a brick wall Reena Spaulings The Bricks 2006 Acrylic on canvas Fund for the Twenty-First Century, 2007 The Bricks was made by Reena Spaulings, a fictional artist, art dealer, and literary persona who was created by a group of artists interested in upending conventional ideas of authorship and individualism. This work is a double-sided, unstretched canvas depicting a brick wall. It can be installed in many different configurations, either hanging on the wall or laying on the floor. The motif was inspired by the Lower East Side neighborhood in New York, where an associated gallery, Reena Spaulings Fine Art, is located. In The Bricks, normally heavy, impenetrable clay blocks become lightweight and flexible, prompting a shift in our expectations of the architecture that makes up our everyday surroundings. Kids Bricks that break the rules. This artwork looks like a wall-but it doesn't behave like one! Bricks have been painted on both sides of the unstretched canvas. It can be hung, folded, or draped. What would you do with it? Here's another twist: The artist, Reena Spaulings, isn't one person. It's a made-up name used by several artists. If you and your friends or family created artworks together, what would you call yourselves?

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith Citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation, 1940-2025 Paperdolls for a Post-Columbian World 1991 Pastel, ink, pencil, and charcoal on paper Gift of the artist, 2023 The artist explains how this work responds to personal and collective histories. A 222 English Only These paper dolls critique the history of the forced removal and attempted cultural assimilation of Native Americans by the US government. Informed by the lives and experiences of the artist's Salish ancestors, the drawings depict a fictional family named the Plenty Horses, who appear alongside a Jesuit priest. From 1864 to 1972, Jesuits operated a Federal Indian Boarding School at the St. Ignatius Mission on the Flathead Reservation in Montana, where Smith was born. It was one of more than four hundred schools that sought to eradicate Indigenous cultures. Smith uses a seemingly lighthearted and humorous approach in her critique of this dark history. For instance, by referencing Barbie but replacing her convertible and designer accessorles with hospital gowns and maid's uniforms, the artist calls attention to socioeconomic disparities and highlights the adversities Native Americans face
