One of the last idiots to write about film for an alt-weekly
Good week. Most of the time the awards season crunch leads to some duds, but for the past few days I've been lucky.

Truly a great indie pop album. Every song is a banger.

Sort of like a hard boiled riff on Stand by Me with some supernatural horror thrown in. Involving story, but the author has a penchant for repetition that underlines his themes more than necessary.

I am a sucker for stories that describe the beginning, heyday, and end of a social scene. This one is no different, evoking a specific vibe without getting too wistful about it.

Thinking about this for no real reason this morning.

You can immediately tell he's still got it, a blessing and a curse. Some scenes and characters are terrific, but the frequent inscrutability never adds up to much. Still, by setting it in the 1930s, the parallels to our current times are both eerie and instructive.

68 percent and "certified fresh"?

The term has no meaning anymore, and since this was directed by a former YouTube movie reviewer (barely a critic), I would hope this embarrasses him at least a little bit.

Today would have been my dad’s 71st birthday. In his honor, my wife made some boozy cupcakes (his favorite). No candles, so in lieu of them I would like to gently remind you to contact your loved ones.

It may sound abstract that one day they will no longer be around, until one day they aren’t.

If you see her, you’re already dead.

Looking forward for a reprieve from today’s discourse to watch a nice movie about a rich “genius” who ignores society’s problems to create a deranged artificial intelligence that no one with any sense really wants.

Indeed. Here’s what I said about it.

Your boy just tried a quadruple IPA and is feeling pretty pretty good.

I don’t get quoted in trailers as often as my colleagues, but when I do, it is for gloriously tasteless films.

Spotted on a stroll through Capitol Hill yesterday afternoon. Somehow I don’t think anyone is going to snag that slim volume.

Psychologically astute portrayal of families, friends, betrayal, and forgiveness. You can tell the author is also a poet. He has a deft gift for language and punctuation, plus an attention to human behavior that recalls Ian McEwan at his best. Recommended!

Compelling coming of age story set in Tanzania, long banned because of its frank depiction of sexuality, now finally in English.

Upsetting and wise.

Go to a rock show.

You’ll be around your people, and it’s so much more cathartic than doomscrolling.

My POV from the same set.
