I have to say that the whole course of events the last decade has pretty much ruined spy thrillers for me. Watching MI5 or a covert CIA ops in a movie or show feels a little lame when you know in reality secrets are probably just dished out as an appetizer at Mar-a-Lago.

Sure! You do you

Also, as a Canadian, I think it's been made pretty clear that leaders/politicians that stand up to Trump get political dividends. Something Starmer could probably use right about now...

Riight. And personally I think it's been made pretty clear that placating him accomplishes nothing but standing up to him can do a great deal.

Well speaking as a Canadian, I was surprised how much I appreciated this from Davey.

I did the same thing

The joke is slightly undercut by the fact that this looks awesome.

Although I think it is clear that the destruction of the East Wing caused a great disturbance in the Force.

latest polls I see show Mamdani in front with ~40% then Cuomo at 28% and Silwa and 18%. Might change in 2 weeks, but Cuomo should come in 2nd. The amusing aspect is that Cuomo is convincing Silwa to drop out because he is the only one to beat Mamdani. Would just be funny if Cuomo then comes third.

Silwa getting more votes than Cuomo on election night would also be a fun result

And to continue with the "Are we the baddies?" sketch - even if you didn't know what that specific symbol meant - what is the "good" reason to get a skull tattoo on your chest?

At least this came out before the Primary I guess...

Not just any social media....

Get the sentiment - but I think a lot of Americans misjudge the extent to which this really isn't a joke to Canadians.

In a world where Canada has joined the US - we are not assuming we will have any representation at all.

Genuine question - when are the ballots printed? Like at what point is it just too late?
October 17, 2025 at 6:08 PM
If anything it's more important now than ever before.

I never understood how the whole "moderate" reputation thing started. He was clearly appointed to carry out a specific mission. I remember how quickly he was appointed to circuit court, then SCOTUS then CHIEF SCOTUS within just a few years after Rehnquist's death. That doesn't happen for no reason.

Again - what you are saying will "destroy the fabric of the republic" is just par for the course in most other countries.

Not saying France, or Brazil or South Korea don't have other problems, but prosecuting corrupt leaders in all three has, if anything, been signs of a healthier democracy.

Slippery slope - to what? What is the nightmare scenario here if the US actually prosecuted heads of state that are worthy of prosecution? [Again - Nobody is saying throw EVERY leader in prison]

Because right now (especially after Trump v US) the expectation seems to be Pres can do anything.
October 14, 2025 at 8:24 PM
bah! "...was NOT frivolous..."
October 14, 2025 at 7:02 PM
Not sure what else to say other than I disagree. I think heads of state worrying that their conduct could be later prosecuted leads to better decisions.

The decision to invade Iraq was "frivolous" and I suspect that if the US was signed up to the ICC, Bush would very likely be facing trial.

I agree Trump is HUGE departure and that the kind of scandal that brought down Nixon, or got Clinton impeached is just a regular Tuesday under the Trump administration. But this is my point - I think a part of the reason it has gotten so brazen is because prior scandals weren't dealt with.

Ford pardoned Nixon to negate a potential criminal prosecution. It's arguable if he would have been found guilty, but the move was considered unpopular at the time and likely a part of the reason Ford lost in 1976. I would argue that pardon set the wheels in motion to encourage further lawlessness.
October 14, 2025 at 6:47 PM
First of all, I never said the "majority of its leaders" should be criminally prosecuted (although....). I meant if you have enough evidence to prosecute, the significance of the office should not hold you back from following the law. In fact, they should be held to a higher standard.
October 14, 2025 at 6:43 PM
As a non-American - I think this view is a big part of the problem. Most other democracies have no issues putting past leaders behind bars if there is sufficient evidence.

I mean Sarkozy is set for prison next week.
October 14, 2025 at 5:49 PM
I think, quite frankly, it makes the case that the problem with Nixon, Reagan, Bush, etc. [from a fringe right point of view] Is that they did not go far enough!

If they broke norms (or outright broke the law) and then faced no consequences other than losing an election the result is Project 2025.
