At least 347 civilians were killed, raped, and mutilated in the Mỹ Lai massacre.

The sum total of all prison time served by the perpetrators of the Mỹ Lai massacre, and the many senior officers who covered it up, was 3 days.
We’ve had a bit of snow in Toronto.

Photos of the massacre surfaced on November 20, 1969. Four days later, Mike Wallace interviewed one of the perpetrators of the Mỹ Lai massacre, Paul Meadlo.

Q. And babies?
A. And babies.

During the Tết Offensive, the police chief of Saigon summarily executed a suspected Việt Cộng member, shooting him point blank in the head, right in front of an Associated Press photographer and a film crew.

The Tết Offensive was a failure for the Việt Cộng. But it soured Americans on the war.

In May 1963, Diệm forbids the display of Buddhist flags during Vesak (the Buddha's Birthday), even though Vatican flags were allowed one week earlier. When people protest the ban, police open fire, killing 9 civilians.

In June 1963, monk Thích Quảng Dức self-immolates to protest Diệm's govenment.

Fighting ensues.

In 1959, anti-Diệm forces in the south form the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, and later the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam. While nominally a broad coalition, it's mostly a front for the Việt Minh.

Diệm dubs them the Việt Cộng.

Diệm sees the emperor as a rival for power. In 1955, he rigs a referendum to decide if the State of Vietnam should remain a monarchy or become a republic. "Republic" wins with 98.9% of the vote, and 133% voter turnout.

Diệm becomes the first president of the new Republic of Vietnam. (Same flag.)

In 1949, France tries to gain support by bringing back the emperor. Disregarding the feelings of Cochinchina, they unite Vietnam as the State of Vietnam, within the French Union. The State of Vietnam is nominally under Emperor Bảo Đại, but it's a puppet of France.

The nominally autonomous southernmost part of Vietnam does not want to unite with the rest of Vietnam. It declares itself the Autonomous Republic of Cochinchina. France agrees to recognize them, infuriating Hồ.

In August of 1945, the August Revolution happens, in which Communists led by Hồ Chí Minh rebel (known as the Việt Minh) rebel against the Japanese.

At this point, Japan is in the process of losing WW2. They give up on Sept 2, and Hồ declares independence as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

In March 1945, Japan annexes Vietnam and the French flee.

Vietnam is now the Empire of Vietnam, nominally under Emperor Bảo Đại, but effectively a puppet state of the Empire of Japan.

Prior to 1945, Vietnam is part of French Indochina, along with Laos and Cambodia (though the southernmost part of Vietnam has nominal autonomy under the emperor Bảo Đại).

At this point, most Westerners have not heard of "Vietnam". They know of the "Annamite" people in "Indochina".

So apparently Trump wants to annex us for our rare earth minerals.

I don’t understand. Canada has less than 1% of the world’s rare earth elements. Why not go annex Brazil or Australia?

I’m surprised at how many people I’ve seen saying that BlueSky is great because it doesn’t have an algorithm.

You guys. It has an algorithm.
