Makes sense, ideally the complexity of text presented when solving problems should increase gradually according to students age. Also as in everything the information should be presented in real life scenarios where the student feels identified to really generate a sense of achievement when solving.

Copying down the word problem forces the student to slow down and engage with the problem in a more deliberate way, which can improve comprehension.

I can think of many reasons why it can be helpful with the correct approach.

From generating an active engagement to helping dissect the problem..
