The moral force behind the renewed fight for freedom bolstered the Union war effort both politically and militarily.
While limited in its scope and reach, the Emancipation Proclamation signaled Lincoln's vision for the future with the freedom it promised, dependent upon Union victory. While largely symbolic, it changed the character of the war and enabled Black men to serve in the Union army.
