This is one of the reasons autism is under-diagnosed. A lot of us learn to mask and internalise our symptoms when we are young (often for our own safety). The symptoms we don't hide just make us seem weird and withdrawn, they aren't as disruptive to teachers and parents. But masking is exhausting.
