cat /etc/os-release

What does this return?

This partly depends on the distro+hardware we end up using. The 5.4 kernel came out in 2019, so we can't expect it to get updates for longer. I don't have much expertise with bare metal programming, so can't comment on if this is good or bad.

A kernel upgrade goes mostly unnoticed for most users.

Dang it!

Looks like the package names changed. Try running this please

Sorry you had to face constant disappointments with this 😅

I never expected that newer drivers would not run older hardware.

Let's wait for some veterans from bsky to reply 🙂

The ppa route should get the 340 drivers installed, but I doubt it'll get you the smooth gameplay you're after 😅

Another option is to downgrade your installed kernel to an old LTS kernel or install an older version of mint that comes with the 5.4 lts kernel that supports the nvidia-340 driver

Looking at
www.kernel.org/category/rel..., 5.4 gets EOL this December. So there goes that 😅

Crap! One last try?

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kelebek333/nvidia-legacy

sudo apt update

sudo apt install nvidia-340-updates nvidia-340-updates-dev xorg-modulepath-fix

Please try these one by one from your terminal.

The newer nvidia drivers should easily work. The 8800 GTS was a challenge when it was new.

Let's get mint installed on to your hardware and check if the driver manager is able to install the proprietary driver for it.

Ah ok! I assumed you were working from an installed copy of mint. Good catch Mika 👍

Good luck with the installation🤞

In your terminal

sudo apt update

This updates the software list cache from mints servers on your machine

sudo apt upgrade

This updates the installed software on your machine

Reboot.

Then see if the driver is found

sudo ubuntu-drivers list

Dang! What nvidia card are you rocking? And your mint version please?
November 4, 2025 at 3:23 AM
Nvidia provides graphics drivers too. In Linux Mint/Ubuntu, the Driver Manager program should auto-detect the best video driver.
Make sure to choose the non-nouveau version.

If it ain't grooving, jump back to windows on the primary SSD.

Hop on the linuxmint forums forums.linuxmint.com or discord if you're into that discord.com/invite/mint

Agreeing wholeheartedly with your sentiments in the thread.

If you can spare an SSD, put linux mint linuxmint.com/download.php on it and try doing one thing from your workflow on it. When you get into a rhythm for it, bring in the next one and 🔁

Blasphemy! A sweet chutney??

You can do coconut, mint, tomato, peanuts(the only nut allowed) and maybe curd chutneys if you're feeling adventurous.

What are we as a society going to come up with next? Pineapple on pizzas? Chocolate syrup on dosas?

God speed 🖖
