Is the article as bad as that AI generated image?

Of course we will. They’re the dominant airline for many destinations globally.
August 20, 2025 at 10:26 PM
Yeah, it’s not a new issue. If they truly cared about the “slaves” in their ranks, they’d have held fast before. All the people holding CUPE up as some saviour of the working class are naive. They’re playing a PR & negotiation game, same as AC.
August 20, 2025 at 4:46 PM
They’ve used unpaid ground time to get higher wage increases & guaranteed cancellation pay, largely to benefit senior FAs. They used “modern day slavery” as a bargaining chip and PR slogan.
August 20, 2025 at 4:36 PM
“At least” 60minutes. That means guaranteed 1hr, but maybe more. At least that’s how I read it.

“Agreed” - CUPE
August 20, 2025 at 3:29 AM
We don’t yet know if it’s capped or not so a lot of details still to come. Sure, it’s more than the company was offering, but seems some FAs are not liking it so far.
August 20, 2025 at 12:55 AM
They accepted unpaid ground time in exchange for higher block time wages. It was good for sr members, who tend to do long hauls where ratio of block/ground is higher. Totally screwed juniors/short haulers. Solidarity is a bit of an illusion…
August 20, 2025 at 12:47 AM
If you’re an FA who was expecting full wages for ground time you’ve got to be a bit miffed at this deal.
August 20, 2025 at 12:40 AM
Yeah, unless there’s a cap to it? Gives enough time for the other airline unions to negotiate the same deal so everyone is charging more for flights to cover extra expense. Lower flight wage increases, so senior staff might be pissed. Definitely sounds like shell game for optics.
August 20, 2025 at 12:38 AM
So yeah, 50% for at least 60min. And 21% increases over 4yrs. Doesn’t sound dramatically different from the last AC offer, tbh. www.cbc.ca/news/busines...

They are not full time workers as their time on duty is limited by Transport Canada regulations.

Do the math on the minimum wage thing. It’s heavily biased and compares apples to oranges.
August 18, 2025 at 8:29 PM
Both. They’re both waging a PR war, and being selective in the facts they present and how they present them.
August 18, 2025 at 8:27 PM
They are pretty much saying the same thing. They are comparing 160hrs/month at minimum wage to 75 hrs/month at lowest FA salary. Of course that going to be lower; it’s a part time job.
August 18, 2025 at 8:26 PM
CUPE doesn’t dispute that more hours are paid under latest offer, and uses creative math to get to their below minimum wage claims.
August 18, 2025 at 8:23 PM
www.aircanada.com/media/air-ca... yes, it’s from AC, and vague of course, but it’s public. There were only two sides in the room, so any details are going to be somewhat biased.

“Fine with it” the the general sense of give&take during negotiations. Do wages need to go up? Of course, it’s been 10yrs. Should they be paid for every hour? Maybe. Then are they going to accept lower wage increases to counteract the inflated ones they got by agreeing to unpaid?
August 18, 2025 at 8:05 PM
I’m on the FA’s side; AC is generally a shit corp. But I dislike the “modern day slavery” “unpaid won’t fly” rhetoric when the union has been agreeing to this, mostly for the benefit of senior members. They accepted it in exchange for higher wages in the avg. They know this. They were fine w/ it.
August 18, 2025 at 8:01 PM
The unpaid time is in the contract the union negotiated 10yrs ago. They agreed to it. The latest AC offer actually includes pay for hours worked.
