I think contributing to open source is the most underrated one, it teaches you so much code and people skills, plus exposes you to a new ways of thinking.

As much as I enjoy Lua, I would hate writing code in Lua, plus can't find a good guideline on how to develop a plugin for Lua

Not related, but I found sqlx to be a bit easier, then again I am more used to raw sql rather than orm
