Should writers at least try to have a back up idea, even if it's not as fleshed out? A: As of right now, we're not all that worried about having our numbers skewed too heavily. During interest checks, we saw a pretty even split between writers and artists, and many of the interested artists have expressed a willingness to work with multiple writers. Even accounting for those who might not follow through from interest check to sign up (and those who might drop from sign up to check-in 1), we shouldn't struggle in that area. If we'd seen more of a disparity, it's likely we would have pushed the word count higher. Thankfully we didn't, so we stuck with 10k. As for worry about no artist being into a writer's idea... That's part of the reason why we're having artists give us 5 (possibly 6) choices. While you could still see it, it's unlikely there will be an idea with absolutely zero takers. If we suspect there are a few ideas that may be a little harder to match (obscure crossover, tough subject matter, etc), we might ask artists about runner up choices. We also have a few contingency plans to make sure everyone gets a matching pair. TLDR: We'd rather find an artist who is interested in the idea but didn't put it in their first choices over making a writer scrap a month's worth of work or work double duty.

An update will be added to clarify, but in the mean time: Discord invite links will be sent on July 7th, as soon as physically possible for our mod team after the closure of the form. We'll post on our social media accounts to let you know as soon as all invites are sent out so that you can alert us if you believe it got lost/check your spam. We may do a cursory screening (checking for signs of obvious AI usage or that you meet the age requirements), but beyond those, all who sign up should receive the discord invite on July 7th!

Answer: Unfortunately, we cannot promise this! Since there's been a few questions regarding the matching process, we've updated the info document to clarify how the matching process will go, but the key reason we cannot promise this is: The matching process is meant to be anonymous to avoid issues of artists gravitating towards bigger/more popular writers and to give smaller writers with less of a "name" (so to say) a chance to collaborate with someone new, who they might not otherwise get a chance to speak to or work with. If we allowed people to simply pick who their match was, it would go against that, especially as I imagine many people would request to simply just work with their friends. That's not to say we won't pair people together if they're friends, but that we won't be taking that into account when we make pairs. Our focus is on matching people with ideas they're most excited about and managing any potential comfort issues regarding blocks or trigger. It's part of why we ask writers to mostly keep their ideas to themselves and other writers until the matching period; we want artists to pick their top five based exclusively on how much the idea calls to them—not on how much they specifically want to work with a writer.

Answer: Pulling from the artists on the mod team: Moodboards can be a blessing as they serve as an open door between artist and writers. They're useful for clarifying some hard to describe details, getting across your initial vision and vibe, and can help refine the piece so that both parties are on the same wavelength. If used, we recommend it being more about opening a conversation than directing. Be open to your artist having their own moodboard and doodles to offer you in exchange. Though we likely sound like a broken record, it's up to you how much you influence each other. Your partner might be fine being handed a moodboard and your draft/outline and going ham, or they may prefer back and forth brainstorming. Just try to be respectful and remember you're not commissioning them; you're collaborating.

Question: hi! this is my first big bang, so i was wondering: what is the extent of the writer/artist collaboration beyond the fic informing the art? will we be helping each other flesh out ideas/brainstorming? will the development of the art affect the fic at all? thanks for hosting this, so excited! <3 Answer: While we recommend that writers have an outline (or at least a solid grasp of their fic and the expected background ships, triggers, and over all content that might be relevant to a partner), it's really up to the pairs to decide how much collaboration and influence the artist has on the piece. Writers are encouraged to be open to fleshing out details of the original concept with their partner. You should probably still be able to keep it within the scope of the project, but beyond that, have fun. The initial outline is mostly to ensure that no one is surprised by topics they can't or won't want to handle. It's also useful for helping artist known future scenes that they might be interested in illustrating, instead of relying on what a writer has done. But if you're having an open dialogue, it's much easier to avoid stepping on toes and so a writer's initial outline does not need to be rigidly held to. Of course, the answer can also be "not very much" if you'd both prefer to keep things as they are. From personal experience, it's really about as much as you put in. Be willing to talk to your partner and share your progress as you work. You'll have most fun like that.

However, we want this event to go as smoothly as possible, so we aim to ensure that match ups work out. On the sign up form, you'll be able to tell us any particular people or concepts you'd like to avoid. During check-in 1 and matching, you'll be allowed to update these if things have changed. When mods make pairs, we'll take these into account to hopefully match you with someone you can vibe with. If an accident happens and you're still matched with someone you absolutely can't work with, we'll do our best to reorganize. During check-ins, we'll also be frequently evaluating how you feel about your partner's communication. If things are going poorly, the mods will step in and do our best to fix things and facilitate communication. Our goal is to make this a fun event, and we'll do our best to make sure it is.

Answer: Pairings will happen after check-in 1, so you'll have to be locked into your idea by then. Match-ups will be anonymous, artist will pick the top 5 ideas that most interest them based on a summary, tags, and whatever extra information you think matters most. If you're between ideas, try not to focus on what your partner would most like to draw, but what you would be most excited to see illustrated. This about challenging yourself to write that "longer" fic that you've been holding off on writing. You should be excited about it! The person who is as excited as you about the idea will naturally gravitate towards it.

AKATB responded: Hello! Thank you for your question. Artist are expected to turn in 1 fully rendered piece at minimum. This is likely to be art depicting a scene within the fic, but we would like to leave room for pairs to discuss what they believe works best. As this piece is likely to have multiple (possibly full body) characters and at minimum a background, as well as the shorter time frame that artists are working under, we believed this to be the best goals to set for each group. I hope this clears up any confusion!
