i think the best way i can sum things up is that i had a mostly enjoyable time with fusion, but even though i got cheated out of being able to actually 100% it, i think i'd honestly rather replay any 2d metroid before i touch fusion again. it's got high highs and low lows.

boss fights like BOX, ridley, and nightmare can get really frustrating because they're fairly quick fights but the amount of movement they require in such a short period of time is really frustrating and the punishment for failing at uncomfortable controls is tanking your health.

fusion beats the shit out of you too, you take so much damage from so many encounters which is great because it makes all your upgrades feel extremely valuable, and unfortunate it's often incredibly punishing for making a small mistake or struggling with the controls.

however, there are definitely times where it feels like there was no way i was supposed to know where to go without a guide or a really subtle tell from the game that i could only understand or notice after i had already found the solution from said guide.

the linear design and lack of exploration everybody complains about is not a problem for me, in fact i thought the way you explore each individual area and sometimes go off the beaten path and feel like you're going where you're not allowed to be is really fun.

i ultimately did not finish it 100%, the game cut me off at the end before i could backtrack for the items i missed, so it was more like it became a replay to confirm some of my feelings i remember from years ago. so how do i feel about fusion?
...mixed. so mixed.

fun fact, fusion was my first 2d metroid game! i played it for the first time years and years ago but this month's gaming challenge got me to play a platformer, so it was an opportunity to replay a game i've wanted to 100% for a long while.

Metroid Fusion

in short, i am conflicted, especially with the story, but enjoyed myself a lot otherwise and kept constantly wanting to continue playing it.
pokemon good. i still choose to see the good in it.

i judge the story so harshly because XY's story really needed more, and legends seems to really be this spinoff made to add more to and enhance the main series games, and in that aspect i think Z-A fails but... in everything else, i do think it's a good solid pokemon game overall
October 27, 2025 at 11:05 PM
it's a pokemon game and yeah ok i AM biased maybe but there was still something about Z-A that made me constantly think about playing it whenever i was doing anything else. i finished it the whole way through, something i cannot say about my first attempt to play legends arceus.

while i'm certainly not good or used to them, the changes to the combat system to make pokemon more of a real-time action RPG with more consideration to movement to build off of what legends arceus made were great, and i think this game made bosses WAY better.

all of the new characters from rank F onwards are really fun, really interesting, or both. i liked corbeau and canari more than i thought, and i really loved gwynn and lebanne. a lot of the new megas introduced outside of pre-release trailers and stuff were really cool to see.
October 27, 2025 at 11:05 PM
something still... really got me enjoying this game, though. i never really liked lumiose city in XY but Z-A being set entirely within it and adding so much to it meant i wanted to go around and explore all of it as soon as i started. i loved every time more wild areas appeared.

lida questions whether or not she should evolve her partner for the good of the team, but when given an item to do it she just does it immediately without a second thought. xerneas and yveltal are only ever mentioned once in passing in one dialogue box.

this game unfortunately feels like it jumps from one story arc to the next while only being focused on what the end point is, the promotion match, and then moving on. the biggest problem with this story is it sets up good ideas with good characters and goes nowhere with them.
October 27, 2025 at 11:05 PM
there are a lot of mysteries or plot points created by both XY and Z-A that are not resolved by the time Z-A's credits roll. who is taunie/urbain looking for? what happened to their mom? what was going on at quasartico? what's the connection between corbeau and lysandre?
October 27, 2025 at 11:05 PM
i feel heartbroken saying that i think this game really needed more time in the oven. the biggest example is being told the whole structure of the game is climbing up ranks one by one, from Z to A, and then going from rank V to rank F, and feeling like you lost most of the game.
October 27, 2025 at 11:05 PM
the biggest thing for me is...... this is not what i expected it to be? rather than a game to expand on the lore of XY (like how arceus did for DPPt), Z-A feels more it makes the occasional callback to XY as a foundation to make its own completely different story and... i'm mixed
October 27, 2025 at 11:05 PM
i genuinely enjoyed this game and a lot of my days these past couple weeks have been me wishing i had a lot more time to play it. i took it rather slow and was pretty satisfied throughout my entire playthrough, and i want to continue playing it now that i've finished main story.
October 27, 2025 at 11:05 PM
pokemon games nowadays have such a... difficult reputation and it's tough even having a conversation about what they're like, if they're even good or if it's even okay to like them, and what each release means for the cascading future of the series so... i'll keep it brief?
October 27, 2025 at 11:05 PM
in a way, this is a sequel to those games, taking place 5 years later with a few of the same characters, in the same place, in order to expand on things like AZ, whatever happened to lysandre, zygarde's involvement in XY's plot, and eternal floette.
October 27, 2025 at 11:05 PM
it is so so exciting to have a new pokemon game again. i didn't realize how long it had actually been since i played scarlet and violet for the first time, and while a second legends game wasn't that surprising, one set in lumiose city to expand on X and Y certainly was.
