Bonus library book this week: Mary Ann Caws (ed.), SURREALIST PAINTERS AND POETS: AN ANTHOLOGY

Checked out on a whim, flipped through a bit. I'll need a more focused primer someday.

Library book of the week: Izumi Suzuki, TERMINAL BOREDOM

I confess I didn't read the author bio until I was almost finished, and it shook me. The author died in 1986?!? I had honestly believed these stories were, like, really recent. I remember thinking one observation was about COVID-19.

Library book of the week: Neige Sinno, SAD TIGER

Another memoir, also masterful, also about humans persisting in a world also populated by evil.

Library book of the week: Shon Faye, LOVE IN EXILE

If I were forced to teach a high school class, I'd have this on the reading list. A master work.

Library book of the week: PORTRAITS IN LIFE AND DEATH, Peter Hujar

I know next to nothing about photography, but this was neat, in a somber way

Library book of the week: INVENTING THE RENAISSANCE, Ada Palmer

Have to return early because there are multiple holds behind me. I only got about 10% into it, because it was immediately obvious I need to buy a copy. The best non-fiction book I've read in at least a decade. Exceptionally good.

Library book of the week:
CRONOPIOS AND FAMAS, Julio Cortázar

Only got through about a third. Maybe I'll come back to it, but returning for now.

The worst insult I can think of is that it feels like what I'd write if I were forced to write a book. Maybe it's building to something?

Library book of the week:
MULTIPLE CHOICE, Alejandro Zambra

Halfway through, I feared this wasn't going to stick the landing, but the last third didn't disappoint

Gmail has an ad for "DOGE Relief," which is a link to some car insurance broker. Worst of all, when I attempted to report it for impersonating a government agency, instead Google informs me that they have already verified the advertiser's identity!

Compare that to the probability of loss to an average policyholder at a large bank.

Yes, they will screw up the FDIC system. But will they ever stick depositors with the bag? It wasn't long ago that this was that crowd's reaction to instability in the regional bank sector
