Very true. But to go from being friends with Tig Nataro to Linda McMahon (as an example) just strikes me as a massive downgrade in one's personal life.

Having just gone through this sort of issue (though I think mine was from a data link; I got the delightful bonus of getting 150 texts at once trying to hide their purchase), does using PayPal protect somewhat in these circumstances? Do the scammers get the CC number in those situations?

I’m not a curler but I’m pretty sure that in any midsize or smaller city/town/village in Canada, that much would get you an entire year, indoors, playing on ice that has been tended to by someone trained to do it since birth and has never been touched by a skate.
