The biggie that we missed out on was John Bradfield's original train plan.
If you're going to bulldoze half of Balmain, at least make it for a train loop through Leichhardt. And another train loop through Gladesville. And then also build another rail loop to Coogee.

What impact do you think "Punishing the Hostile Natives, by clearing the Country of them entirely" would have?
Or ordering "as many Natives as possible to be made Prisoners, with the view of keeping them as Hostages"?

Yeah, large parts of each are very suburbanised and car dependent.
But what I'm getting at is they're a series of cities and metro areas that have sprawled into each other.
So in SE Qld you have Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads, Sunshine Coast, Logan, Ipswich, Redcliffe, & Toowoomba.

The creator of Pixelfed.social, @dansup.bsky.social, has just announced the next version of the app is getting starter packs.
So Pixelfed will have starter packs and no ads, while Instagram has ads and support for Fascism.
I say it's time to dump Meta!

Worth mentioning that on page 14 of the report you linked to, the negative benefit/cost ratio assumes a 7% discount rate on social benefit.
But with a 4% discount rate, the BCR is above 1.2 to 1.4.
That's assuming $0 in farebox cost offsets over 50 years!
And there's another critical issue...

Okay, and here's the PBO's assumptions for those operating expenses: pbo.vic.gov.au/response/6616
It includes this gem: "Our estimates do not consider any partial offsets to costs from farebox revenue due to increased passenger trips."
So 50 years of operating costs assuming zero additional fares.

Then how is it that countries like Sweden and France manage to deliver projects for cheaper than the high cost Anglophone countries?
Hint: It's not labour costs or a lack of regulation.
It's because they haven't gutted their public service to the same extent Australia, the US, and UK have:

The report finds a strong connection between public sector capacity and project outcomes.
Public sector capacity gets hollowed out under neoliberal policies.
It notes procurement methods with stronger public sector involvement, like design-bid-build, tend to be used in low cost countries... (1/2)

Also, if you're in one of the older apartments down the Olympic Park end, getting to either Rhodes or Olympic Park Station (and then changing at Lidcombe) is basically an equally long and inconvenient walk.

Just read this order from Lachlan Macquarie, who was the Governor of NSW from 1810 to 1821.
