But it was contamination. Bit by bit, we pieced it together — and here it is, the complete genome assembly of a new A. guillouiae strain.

This project began by pure serendipity: while analyzing a soil mite genome, Oppiella nova. We found sequences from an Acinetobacter bacteriophage. It initially led us to believe that this was a case of horizontal transfer.

This suggests that sphingolipids such as ceramide could be a possible biomarker for disease progression and monitoring.

We have found a modifier of SMN, acid sphingomyelinase, and drugs that inhibit it and increase SMN protein levels. Most importantly, we have linked sphingolipid metabolism to SMA for the first time.
