Yeah, this is one of those things which absolutely is a side effect of having an old-ass constitution where nobody ever said “hey, let’s update some procedures a little, because, you know, it’s been 200 years.” I also think that a functional equivalent of a no-confidence vote should be mandatory.

Making it up as I go along, but I have a whole Chinese cabbage, so I’m going to chop it, shred a block of tofu, toss with olive oil and a “sweet Korean spice blend” I bought (brown sugar, salt, garlic, sesame seeds, gochugaru) and roast at 400 until caramelized.

A lot has changed since 2009-2010, when I was doing the fieldwork for my book, but I think the stories I tell about Arab/Muslim political lives are a part of the process that brings us to the mayor calling a bodega cat basha in a campaign ad. Maybe check it out! nyupress.org/978147985487...

That's a good question! I thought of her originally but I feel like I know a bunch of leftists who are disappointed with her - might just be because she hasn't been vocally pro-Palestine enough? Or because it's actually hard to get things done? I'd need to know more, tbh...

This is making me think about what a Mamdani-equivalent mayor in one of Canada’s big cities might be - if Catherine McKinney had won here in Ottawa, maybe?

I agree about Mamdani being very distinctly NYC, but the point about the DSA being reasonably congruent with the left of the NDP seems about right to me, if you’re looking big picture.

Agreed about cranberry sauce. My list is similar, except for Tofurky and mashed.

This fucking sucks and I’m so sorry. I’m a professor in Canada who knows a lot of queer-focused immigration and asylum lawyers. If you’d like me to see if I can get you a free consult with someone, especially about your wife’s status options, let me know.
