I'll be 100% honest here, Self Esteem, I don't need to hear songs that sincerely use the word "empowered".

It's really alarming to me to realize how much the mid-00s Timbaland sound on "Sports Car" reads like a throwback now.

Pretty sure they were trying to do the whole "No politics, please!" respectability shit after getting called out for fence-sitting about Palestine. Mostly I remember people referring to them as Sleaford Dads.

PBC is my nom. I said when I posted it for Challenge Week that it was my favourite dream pop song this decade and it still is. I find the production so smooth and satisfying. I can't quite explain why I like it so much more than similar songs, but I do.

I preferred the Kaarija track when it was Jenna Maroney's summer dance jam.

This Lorde song absolutely crushes me.

"How can I take investment advice from a man with an artwork made on Canva?" is such a strong, quick, specific insult, I have to vote for it.

Wednesday remains the champion of "Everything I've read about this band makes me think I should like them, so why don't I?"

The last ten albums I meant to get to in 2025 are going to have to wait, because it's time to switch to a different listening project for 2026. The best things from this project to me were:

1. The Isley Brothers
2. Saint Etienne
3. The Posies
4. Brian Eno
5. Hum

(51/51) Saul Williams- The Inevitable Rise And Liberation Of NiggyTardust!

This starts out as one of most exciting albums I've heard all year, but it seems to slow down as it goes, and I can't tell if that's the album itself, or just me.

(50/51) Meat Puppets- Meat Puppets II

Not quite what I expected, though I guess I did forget the "punk" part of the "cowpunk" label. It's good! But the two songs I already knew ("Plateau" and "Lake Of Fire") are the weirdest, eeriest and best things on here.

(49/51) Lilys- In The Presence Of Nothing

It's really interesting to me how many American shoegaze bands (these guys, Swirlies, Mercury Rev, loveliescrushing) tend towards the drone/psych end of the genre. Of that group, this is my favourite album.

(48/61) Bob Dylan- Blood On The Tracks

My honest initial reaction is "is that it?" re: the acclaim this one has. I quite like some of the more unhinged tracks ("Idiot Wind", "Shelter From The Storm"), but in terms of mid-70s desolation, I much prefer Neil Young's albums.

The tagline from A on the image of B, maybe?

The moment on the Lucretia Delt song where David Sylvain's voice dropped in really woke me up, though. I wasn't looking at the track title/artist, so I really wasn't expecting to hear him.

I was pretty disappointed in the Heartworms LP, honestly, I loved the EP that came out in 2023 and I was hyped for the full-length. NBT is my album of the year, and while "9 2 5" isn't my favourite thing on it, I do love it.

Quite liked the Sacred Paws and Electric Rime tracks, but Corpus Delecti had those classic Goth vibes that always seem to perk my ears up in these polls.

I had the exact same reaction to the WFYE album, though this was one of the tracks I kept.

I don't want to be this guy, but THIS is what all the hype is about re: Geese? I don't hear it.

The opening would have been so much cooler if they hadn't subtitled the fight with the brother and the father.

I understand what Lily Allen is going for, pairing the (obnoxiously) blunt lyrics against the dreamy backing, but it just doesn't land for me at all. Given that chorus, I would have expected her to also have some fun on the verses, but they're not giving me anything.

It's a high bar to clear, but so far DJ Danz is the most 90s song in the entire poll.
January 8, 2026 at 6:08 PM
I liked the Chloe Qisha track until the chorus came up.

Half the reason I love Nourished By Time so much is because he sounds exactly like what I wanted Blood Orange to do after Freetown Sound.
January 8, 2026 at 5:33 PM
Three artists I love (and TLDP), but none of them are giving us their best work here. Going with Sharon here.
January 8, 2026 at 5:32 PM
I wasn't expecting the dramatic disco strings on "Born Again".
