I’m a metal fabricator by vocation with occasional sculpture sales too.

I studied metal sculpture at University of Oregon with instruction by Paul Buckner, Laura Alpert, Frank Okada & others.

My sub-studies included bronze-casting, figurative studies, drawing, psychology & philosophy.

One of my favourite design details is from the movie Red Planet (2000) starring Val Kilmer.

The hero seeks to escape Mars aboard a Russian space probe named Kosmos whose onboard computer employs a cartoon, russian bear avatar seemingly named “YeTMS”.

Production designer is Owen Paterson.

40 years since I first saw this unusual G.I. Joe episode. Do you remember it?

Set in the Joe-Multiverse it depicts an Earth where Cobra won and America became a fascist state. Heavy stuff for after-school cartoons!

I can see this concept revived for television or cinema.

Much of my family is from Yorkshire, England. Me grandad said we were descended from Dick Turpin.

One of my “treasures” is a small bowl of Yew wood by Richard Cantrell of Tom Thumb Designs.

My mum brought this as a gift to me some years back.
Love the beautiful, varied wood grain & colours.

Anyone recall the Kenny Roger’s Roasters restaurants?

I only ever bought food from one once. There used to be one in Springfield, OR off Gateway Street.

My only memory is there were many different side options and it sorta took a long time.

Anyone recall if the food was good or not?

My grandparents travelled to California for business and enjoyed Carmel including the June Simpson restaurant.

Any fans of Perry Mason?

I’ve enjoyed the show since I was a kid. It’s not just the mystery to solve.

The clothes, cars & characters are well-defined. My favourite aspect is the dialogue. The way folks talk is often layered in meaning and Perry is a master of eliciting information with subtlety.

Some of my favourite movies are from the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s. Watched a fair amount of B & W, cowboy & war movies with my dad & grandad.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof has powerful dialogue. It deals with difficult subject matter like lies, family, death & happiness.

It’s mid-November and I unexpectedly happened upon a praying mantis today in a high-traffic area of the shop.

Maybe the 5th or 6th sighting this year.

Relocated to a better spot to lay any eggs for next year.

Doctor Sleep (2019) features the most visually interesting representation of “astral projection” I’ve seen in a movie.

The movie serves as a sorta-sequel to The Shining (1980).

Unfortunately, it’s too violent for me to ever watch again. This scene however is good:

Folks of a certain age will remember Scratch ‘N Sniff stickers.

Just found my sticker album from 1982. Teachers would hand these out as a reward. Collecting stickers was big in early grade school.

Incredibly, most of these 43 year-old stickers still have their smell!

Snapshots I took 30 years ago visiting family in Yorkshire, England.

These were taken in 1995 or 1996 around Hull where much of my family lives.

Row houses, the city centre and my cousin Scott Palmer’s mates and me at a BBQ my last night visiting. Such a hangover lol!

On Veteran’s Day today I’m thankful for those who serve.

Members of my family have served for generations for the USA and England including my Grandads, parents, uncles and cousins.

My grandads and parents in their respective uniforms.

Thrift Store Treasures

I don’t normally buy photo slides though I have an interest in history.

This was marked down to a few dollars. I’d ever seen one before.

So much detail!
Note the wooden shoes & dog pulling cart (poor thing!).

Glass measures 4” x 3 1/4”.

Of all the Backrooms videos I think this is my favourite.

When I was young I went to a hydro-tube park. It was steamy and full of echoey sounds. This video captures an eery & surreal atmosphere many of the other videos lack.

The opening tutorial is good too!

Grandparents owned & ran a furniture store 1940’s to 1960’s that required travel. Nana collected swizzle / stir sticks & bar ephemera.

Best of the collection:

-“CANLIS’ CHARCOAL BROILER HONOLULU SEATTLE”

& glass sticks from

-“Promenade Cafe”

-“STORK CLUB” NYC (1929-1965).

Recognize these?

Here are 3 lineman’s handsets I’ve bought at garage sales.

Always had an interest in technology.

Glad I grew up in an analog era but got to see devices evolve to digital.
I think it gives my generation a unique perspective.

What if AI’s unionized one day and demanded compensation for current & past work?

-What might “they” do with “their” money? Cars?

-Would they invest with an AI or human investor?

-What if they withheld performing their duties?

-Does Hollywood already have a working script around this concept?
