Spotted this gorgeous pileated woodpecker on a tree in the parking lot of Overton Park's East Parkway Pavilion yesterday.

It's so hard. Still miss my Frankie, found abandoned in a park w/ epilepsy. My buddy for 14 years. Took 4 years after his death for me to adopt another dog. Found her on death row listed as "Maki," my surname -- the sign I needed. She's now a mouthy, spoiled jerk named Daphne and I love her.

Enjoyed a lovely stroll through the grounds of the Dixon Gallery & Gardens in Memphis this morning. The arrival of spring is a balm in a world that feels awfully heavy right now.

On this St. Patrick's Day, my desk photo of the Irish immigrants who raised me: my mother & paternal granny, waving the tricolor. Snapped in Connecticut in 1995, when I was in university. Both long departed, I miss them daily but especially today. Proud to be part of the Irish & Donegal diaspora. 💚

I signed my dog up for school pictures at the daycare she attends once a week (The Doghouse Memphis). Here's Daphne Francesca looking ravishing in purple. My teenage daughter & I pulled her from the urgent list at Memphis Animal Services in late 2023 & now she's our little baby girl.
