Does the #air we breathe merit the same attention that we dedicate to the food we eat? Air Tasting is a way of using the senses to understand the atmosphere. During June I'll be #tasting the air near Lost Lagoon in #StanleyPark #Vancouver and posting my tasting notes
West End, #Vancouver, #Canada.

Small patches of blue sky dot a low blanket of thick stratocumulus cloud that courses rapidly NE over the high-rise towers. To the N, NE, and E, a white smoky vapor is rapidly inundating the mountains which have become featureless silhouettes.

Late-summer aromas continue to permeate the forest.

13sep2025, Opal Cone, #GaribaldiPark, Canada.
Eastern crater edge, 13:00.
Roiling clouds snake between the mountains. The cold misty draft from the north is oddly dry to the touch, with a mild #scent of fresh watery methylbenzodioxepinone

Forest north of Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

The forest air carries scents of autumn. The best tasting spots are gentle hillsides, shady but dry, with a dense mix of conifers and deciduous undergrowth.

The landscape is inundated in a smoggy, vaporous #atmosphere with a strong #scent of phenol, like charred wood, cold ashes, and rubber. This #air tastes a lot like the highly mineralized Riesling I had in the Okanagan a couple weeks ago

NW corner of Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

The sky is light blue, fading towards the horizon to a pale golden haze that envelopes the distant mountains.
July 1, 2025 at 2:07 AM
South and SW side of Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

Overhead the sky is sunny with just a few thin white cumulus clouds, but to the north huge grey cumulonimbus masses veil the mountains in foggy blue shadows.
June 29, 2025 at 2:11 AM
Trail along east edge Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

The sky overhead is a uniform bright grey-white of altostratus. Dark nimbostratus clouds drift N, piling up into stacked banks against mountains inundated with a blue mist.

Trail along north edge of filtration ponds, Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

The mountains, dimly visible through blue-grey fog, rise into a thick tufted blanket of grey nimbostratus cloud that obscures the sky.

Trail along north edge of filtration ponds, Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

A patchy layer of pale-grey stratocumulus cloud drifts below a uniform cover of pinkish-white altostratus that spans the entire sky.

23 June 2025, Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

The sky overhead is pale blue with light cirrus streaks. Tall cumulonimbus clouds are gathered to the north and NE. The thick bluish-white vapor veiling the mountains is slowly dissipating.
June 24, 2025 at 3:30 AM
20 June 2025, South shore of Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

The sky is a thick grey tufted blanket of low nimbostratus cloud.

This calm afternoon #air has a damp chill. A weak draft flows evenly from the NE with a smooth watery texture and no perceptible turbulence, almost laminar
June 21, 2025 at 12:37 AM
Trail along west shore of Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver

To the NE a huge cumulonimbus cloud with dark underside looms above the pale blue-grey mountains. Overhead, scattered white cumulus puffs float beneath a thin altostratus layer with long bluish striations spanning the sky from NE to SW
June 19, 2025 at 11:13 PM
Southwest corner of Lost Lagoon, #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

A dense undulating blanket of grey and white nimbocumulus recedes into blue-grey hazy gloom toward NE and E.
June 19, 2025 at 12:25 AM
Walking west from #StanleyPark Nature House, Lost Lagoon, #Vancouver #Canada.

A layer of white and grey altocumulus cloud breaks apart revealing the pale-blue sky and higher islands of cirrocumulus approaching from the NE.
June 18, 2025 at 1:54 AM
#StanleyPark Nature House, Lost Lagoon, #Vancouver #Canada.

A handful of stars are scattered across the faintly glowing midnight sky.

This cool moist midnight #air is eerily placid, but for a faint breath from the SW.
June 16, 2025 at 7:35 AM
SW corner of lagoon #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

Several large white cumulus clouds drift NE across a clear light-azure sky that brightens to a gleaming blueish-white at the western horizon.
June 15, 2025 at 1:23 AM
NW corner of lagoon #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada

The sky is almost completely obscured by a mantle of white stratocumulus cloud that thickens into grey nimbostratus masses towards north and east, descending to cover the mountains in a milky blue-grey fog.
June 14, 2025 at 12:19 AM
11 June 2025, #StanleyPark Nature House, Lost Lagoon, #Vancouver #Canada.

A thin layer of altostratus cloud with a brownish-pink cast blankets the entire sky and gives the landscape a faint orange glow. The mountains are veiled in a milky vapor.
June 12, 2025 at 2:31 AM
South side of lagoon #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada.

The blue sky is streaked with white cirrus clouds toward the west, north, and NE. A westerly front of blue-grey altostratus approaches.
June 11, 2025 at 1:38 AM
Lagoon #StanleyPark, #Vancouver #Canada. 16:50–17:40

The bright pale azure sky is slightly golden towards the west horizon, cloudless but for a couple distant cirrus wisps. Again there's a soft luminous yellowish haze that renders features across the lagoon slightly desaturated and fades shadows
June 10, 2025 at 1:25 AM
Lagoon trail East of #StanleyPark Nature House, #Vancouver #Canada. 16:10–16:45

The sky is totally clear of clouds. This late-afternoon #air is suffused with a light golden haze that fades distant shadows, rendering them pale crushed blacks.
June 8, 2025 at 12:18 AM
Lagoon trail East of #StanleyPark Nature House, #Vancouver #Canada. 16:40–17:20

White contrails cut NW across the light blue sky below a sun wreathed in feather cirrus and stratocirrus clouds.
