Dowd essentially stated that Kirk was playing with fire by taking things in such a dark direction. That's different from saying he deserved it. Assuming this wasn't a government hit, Kirk had that freedom of speech he so valued. He exercised it exactly how he wanted to, and he died on that hill.

You can take the most moderate, centrist dem and the right will call them the second coming of Mao Tse Tung, just like they would with a more progressive candidate. For those susceptible to that message, it doesn't matter who the candidate is. So why alienate the democratic base?
