AI is overwhelming Wikipedia. I write about it.

this week on Wikipedia: the founder of an organization who "provides grants to editors to translate pages" has found out Wikipedia now has a guideline against creating articles with AI and is upset that people want them to "go back to the stone age" (i.e., not use AI)

interesting presentation about, well, ai on wikipedia

nothing new for those in the trenches, but maybe enlightening for others

good metaphor, fits wikipedia too
It is a contaminant. I've compared AI to digital asbestos or microplastics, it gets everywhere, and I don't think people yet grasp how insidious it is, I've spoken before about how asset libraries are being poisoned with it, how it's often undisclosed on these platforms, devs don't always spot it.

how to spot ai on wikipedia

1) do a search across articles, your search terms being 2-3 words/phrases characteristic of AI output; not only are they overrepresented compared to pre-2022 text, they tend to co-occur. the more phrases you search, the fewer false positives (arxiv.org/pdf/2509.09596)

wikipedia has taken so long to address its AI problem that it's now choked with text from multiple AI eras:

- GPT-4 era: delve into how it's important to remember it stands as a testament
- GPT-4o: highlighting the need, underscoring the importance
- GPT-5: has been profiled in regional media

a depressingly common occurrence on wikipedia

"I used AI for ____. [1000 words of arguing later] but can you PROVE that I used AI. SHOW ME THE EVIDENCE."

wikipedia has now crossed 4,000 articles that currently are partly or entirely AI

not counting articles that we haven't found yet or ones that we already fixed

wikimedia foundation continuing to mislead readers that it is an AI-free encyclopedia

when this post was written, "volunteers create and enforce guidelines for responsible use of AI tools" was a lie; there were _no_ guidelines for AI until November 24

if you'd like some depressing reading, here's a running list of wikipedia article drafts rejected for being noticeably and problematically AI

there are over 4,300 in the past six months alone (old drafts get deleted after that)

Wikipedia has hundreds of internal essays, which are non-binding and include:

- "Wikipedia: Fart"
- "Wikipedia: Fuck it"
- "Wikipedia: No climbing the Reichstag dressed as Spider-Man"
- "Wikipedia: Do not throw a vinyl copy of Dookie at editors you disagree with"
- The entirety of its AI guidance

wikimedia's blog post about asking AI companies to pay up glazes beyond reality

for example, "volunteers create and enforce guidelines for responsible use of AI tools across Wikipedia" is false: there literally is no actual guideline

Basically, every article on Grokipedia reads like it was co-written by Ben Shapiro and Berdly from Deltarune.

Crunched the numbers on Grokipedia vs. Wikipedia text (based on 100 articles/~1 million tokens each) to get an idea of how they differ in language.

Thread to come with notes.

highlights:

- grokipedia's tryharding, I Fucking Love Science-esque tone, while actually citing quora, reddit and shit

- grokipedia committing crimes against prose

- grokipedia hates citing books
