Brooke, my husband just asked me what your stans are called. The Whackers? The Miss Mamas? The Spread?

Reporters from CNN, CNBC, Politico, WSJ, and 100+ other outlets covered our company, the dashboard, and what it meant for the average person because of how accessible, easy to understand, and relevant to each person's location it all was.

Bluesky can absolutely be a similar source of data. /fin

The important thing is to SHOW people how close to home the threat is, and the scale at which it is expanding. There will certainly be other fantastic ideas born of the previous pandemic experience, but my team learned for a fact that THIS strategy worked.

I'd love to see similar maps - perhaps pulling in data from trusted non-government sources like @jhubiostat.bsky.social - featured prominently upon login. Or maybe even maps pulling in data from people posting about "testing positive" or having bird flu.

What @bsky.app could learn from this experience - say, in the event of a bird flu pandemic - is that easily accessible VISUAL information (maps, heatmaps, infographics, etc.) that is hyperlocal to a user, can and WILL shape behavior.

No individual's health information was ever revealed, but in being able to see with their own eyes how many thousands and thousands of people in their state were seeking medical intervention each day, it helped demonstrate the scope and speed that the virus was spreading in each state.

What I/we learned is that VISUALIZATION and LOCALIZATION were incredibly effective in communicating the active threat raging across the country.

My role was to share the dashboard, and its rapidly escalating daily appointment numbers, with reporters, who then in turn disseminated the information in their public health reporting.

@chadloder.bsky.social Great question. I was the comms lead for a leading telehealth platform during the previous pandemic. We eventually built a public-facing dashboard mapping state-by-state Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) appointments as a proxy for Covid, long before testing was available.
