In past downturns, Congress has acted to fund federal extended benefits. But with a President who blames statisticians when his policies stall economic growth, Americans could be left high and dry if the economy continues to worsen.

What’s more, these numbers don’t include the 1.83 million Americans who have been out of work for six months or longer—the highest total since December 2021—meaning they no longer qualify for state benefits.

These new layoffs are adding to the rising toll of a tepid economy. This trend has left 1.953 million relying on unemployment benefits, at a time when hiring has slowed in most parts of the economy outside of health care.

While still low, continued claims by federal employees have started to rise, coming in at 8,193 for the week ending July 26 (+362 from July 19), almost double last year’s total at this time.

This is not the economy Americans are looking for.

In short, fewer people are being laid off, but once they are it's harder to find work. That echoes the June JOLTS data which shows new hires in the economy down by 261,000 in the month of June, even as separations have slowed. www.bls.gov/news.release...

(Existing) insured unemployment is up 72,000 over last year - but the number of new claims has slowed over the last month from a high of 250,000 on the week ending June 7 to 218,000 in the last report of July (July 26).
