Here are brief lists of things everyday citizens can do before and after a book challenge is submitted to a school or public library.
PRECAUTIONARY EFFORTS REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF IMPULSIVE REMOVALS 1- Schedule 1:1 Meetings: Schedule meetings with the board to discuss expectations to follow policy 2- Write an Op-Ed: Write an information-packed article on tactics censors use to scare us into forfeiting access 3- Create a Support Campaign: Send letters of encouragement and thanks to those defending access 4- Request a Policy Refresh: Get familiar with the policy, and ask for better guardrails where needed 5- Enlist Help: Encourage freedom to read advocates to volunteer for review committees 6- Encourage Student Reviews: Get young people to submit their own reviews of the books likely to face attacks FREEDOMTOREADPROJECT.ORG REACTIONARY EFFORTS REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF IMPULSIVE REMOVALS 1- Rally Advocates: Host a read-in featuring the challenged books and start an email campaign 2- Get Press: Alert local press to the matter, share records, and connect quotable people 3- Create Book Resumes: Gather professional reviews, awards, teaching guides, and author statements 4- Set Expectations: Demand a fair and transparent process, open to public input 5- Be A Shield: Pay attention to pressure campaigns, especially on social media 6- Show Up: Be at the meetings, give public comment, use the library FREEDOMTOREADPROJECT.ORG
