To be clear I'd prefer the "choice" over the "need". Then again I've run into the same issue in past relationships so just a guess

I feel like it's gotta have something to do with the historical representation of hetero romantic relationships as an exchange of power. I feel like there's still such an emphasis on male partners needing to "provide" something in modern relationships. What's there to provide if there's no need?
