So I looked at the actual article - this is a case of the NYT editorial putting a headline on something that says the opposite of what the article actually says. The article itself is a takedown of a conservative argument.

That's a true and fair generalization.

And to be clear, it's never been okay.

I'm using a loose definition of hidden here - different perspectives. It's hidden when cops choose to police differently based on how a suspect looks; it's hidden when cops focus their presence in certain neighborhoods; it's hidden when cops lie knowing that certain segments of society will believe.

Things can be hidden and also visible at the same time given different perspectives. I agree with you that most white folks have never gone out of their way to look beyond a surface narrative that very quickly collapses if actually looked at closely.

tl;dr fascism has always had a presence in America, it just hid where it could be gotten away with... and grew until it could be gotten away with in plain sight.
