Teaching nonprofits to use AI to reduce burning and increase funding
When I talk to nonprofit leaders about AI for the first time…

I actually spend very little time talking about AI

And spend a lot more time talking about

1️⃣ What work is most frustrating and tedious?

2️⃣ What work has the highest impact for your org?

3️⃣ What work do you love doing the most?

Before you can write well with AI, you need to know how to write well yourself.

Before you can add your own voice to an AI's output, you need to know your own voice.

Before you can check whether AI summarizes a text correctly, you need to know how to read.

There's no AI Literacy without Literacy.

Let’s play out a scenario regarding AI adoption

What might happen if don’t consider new ethical questions and potential threats now?

What if we don’t have hard conversations about AI and adoption?

What if we don’t set strong boundaries now?

Here’s my current take for using AI at none profits.

The more boring the better.

Things that AI is good at:
-standard operating procedures
-board meeting minutes
-volunteer instructions
-grant applications

Things that AI is bad at:
-donation campaign marketing
-donor relations
-copywriting

How I ask for consent when using an AI meeting note taker

Note takers can be great but come with a whole new host of ethical considerations.

Most people don’t realize how intrusive they really are

Here’s what I say…

AI is a “say yes machine”

Nonprofit leaders often ask me,

“Can AI do…(insert their idea)”

And my answer is always “yes, it will try to”

So the question isn’t whether or AI will do it

The question is “will AI do a good job”

And more importantly “do you have the expertise to tell if it’s good”
