Meanwhile, Disney sent a cease and desist to Google the day before announcing this OpenAI deal. Calling out Google's AI products for copyright infringement "on a massive scale."
December 12, 2025 at 3:15 PM
Disney's move follows a pattern: sue AI companies that use characters without permission (like Midjourney), but partner with those willing to pay licensing fees (like OpenAI). It's pragmatic business strategy meeting rapid technological change.
December 12, 2025 at 3:15 PM
But the tension: while Disney & OpenAI profit from this licensing deal the animators & writers who actually created these beloved characters won't receive any compensation. The Animation Guild says their members "deserve to know how their contributions to Disney's global success will be used."
December 12, 2025 at 3:15 PM
Starting in early 2026, Sora users will be able to create short videos featuring 200+ characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. Imagine typing a prompt like "Groot teaching Baby Yoda to dance" and watching AI generate that video.

What has changed is that the Academy rules in 2025 is that AI tools "neither help nor harm nominations" if humans remain at the heart of creative authorship. The reality is that previous films used AI quietly (voice tweaks, eye effects) and now filmmakers can compete proudly with AI generated work.

Could this mean subscribers generating their own DC hero stories? The technology exists for short-form content. The ownership structure would support it. Whether it happens depends on business strategy, creative community relations, and regulatory approval.
December 7, 2025 at 9:31 AM
Key difference: Disney licenses properties with complex creator agreements. Netflix will own Warner Bros. outright. Batman, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and a century of content.
December 7, 2025 at 9:31 AM
The strategic implication? Netflix's complete ownership of Warner Bros. IP could enable AI content creation with fewer legal constraints than Disney faces.

This isn't confirmed. It's analysis of what's technically and legally possible when a platform owns both the IP and distribution channel.

Actuall this isn't about limiting creativity, it's about recognizing that real humans bring digital characters to life. When those humans are identifiable, they deserve protection.
December 2, 2025 at 10:43 AM
The complexity:
• Where's the line between criticizing a character and defaming the operator?
• What happens with fully autonomous AI characters?
• How do we balance creative freedom with performer protection?
• Who has standing when multiple people contribute to one AI character?
December 2, 2025 at 10:43 AM
Basically if you're using AI generated characters voiced or controlled by real performers, those performers now have legal protection against online harassment targeting their digital personas.
December 2, 2025 at 10:43 AM
For AI filmmakers this could mean that virtual actors you create have legal standing, performers voicing AI characters gain protection, digital humans linked to real people = legal identity. Also mocap performers animating avatars can claim defamation and AI voice actors have recourse for harassment
