I'm so sorry for the loss in your family, and even more for the state of the country that makes these considerations necessary. This isn't even the first time today that I've heard from a trans friend planning for travel through unsafe territory. I wish there was more I could do to help.

I've been really impressed by the work done by trans MT state Representative from Missoula, Zooey Zephyr, (active on Bluesky!) defeating several recent anti-trans bills at the state level.

I saw a fair number of Pride flags around Kalispell on my last visit, at least making it competitive with the number of Trump flags. I don't know how that compares to the smaller towns.

A couple of years ago I took the train through NW MT from Seattle. A private "roomette" for two costs only a little more than two coach seats, and keeps interaction with strangers to a minimum en route, especially if you can bring your own food and avoid the dining car...
