Love Genesis Temple. @damiano.bsky.social has a knack for pulling lost bits of gaming history like this up from the depths. His podcast interviewing devs is great too!

If anybody else gets both references in entry number 4 I'll eat a hardboiled ostrich egg

Yes! The Whistling Room shouldn't work nearly as well as it does, but it's stuck in my head for almost a decade.

I've always thought this was a very cool picture of something that could not evoke the alzabo less

I wouldn't bank on its reliability even if you did track this one down; Price was an atrocious scholar even before his full-throated fascist turn.

I wish!

He can also introduce himself by several fake names when trying to pass himself off as a Goodsoup: Hearty Beef 'n' Potato, Wonton, and I think Chunky Vegetable, as well as a fourth I'm forgetting.

Not sure if this counts: he presents himself as the person attached to the reservation at Captain Blondebeard's, but not by name. It's Blondebeard who then addresses him as"Mrs. Brinestoop"

Surely one of them would have a Packard Bell PC in that case!

What time period is it set?

Zach, your friends and I are here today because we're very concerned

Same! My brother and I were nuts for them. His Orange Drawing Book was our favorite, followed by Purple, Green, and then Red a distant fourth.

I loved Ed Emberly as a kid! I need to check that omnibus out. That, and Satan Was My Pimp.

I'm just as delighted to see it from you! Rare to find Nathan readers these days (save maybe Portrait of Jennie), so it's nice to know I'm not the only one who sees One More Spring in AF&PP!

His work is mostly forgotten now, but he was a huge influence on Beagle's early career, first as a writer and then as a mentor. TLU is dedicated to him. (He advised Beagle "The less you try to sound like me, the better you are.") IMO AF&PP is a fabulist takeoff on Nathan's One More Spring.

I haven't read it since I was 19 myself. It'd be interesting to revisit now. I've read Robert Nathan since then, and this is very much Beagle's attempt to write an RN novel. I think it taught him he didn't need to--in TLU he's synthesized his influences into his own voice and stopped mimicking.
