A quick reminder that the Provincial housing mandates are worse than useless. They are set so low that they encourage city councils to celebrate their failures as successes.

Thanks to Councillors Zhou, Maloney, and Meiszner for at least trying to ask some tough questions.

Tell city planners to legalize small lot apartments throughout Vancouver. Not in a few years when they might get around to looking at it, but now, as part of this process. Vancouver has only been falling further behind.

Local control doesn't work:
"The result is an equilibrium that serves no one besides wealthy coastal homeowners. ~11% of San Joaquin County residents... drive more than 90 minutes each way to ... work... most of whom earn under $49,000/year & work blue-collar jobs..."

Vancouver is the most unaffordable city for renters in Canada, but is not making progress on building apartments compared to cities like Calgary and Edmonton, or even the rest of Metro Vancouver.

And congrats to Minister Ravi Kahlon on his new role! Under his tenure, the ministry set up a good foundation for holding city governments accountable for the housing needs of their residents. We look forward to seeing how Minister Boyle builds on that success!

Congrats to Housing Minister Christine Boyle on her appointment! She has long been a strong advocate for both social housing & broad affordability. 2 years ago she pushed to allow more housing in Shaughnessy; now she can do that along with all of West Van & Oak Bay!

The long-awaited Rupert & Renfrew Plan is at Council tomorrow!

The Good: The plan "allows" 6-storey apartment buildings in most residential areas, (eventually) under zoning, i.e. without a spot rezoning process.

"Provinces really hold the key here. They have the most policy levers and, in many cases, they've actually done the least."
'B.C.'s grade suffered because while it encourages density "on paper," its slow permit approvals and high building costs frustrate development.'

Congrats to @gregorrobertson.bsky.social, Canada's new Housing Minister!

Here he is 7 years ago, forcefully arguing that Vancouver needs to move on allowing multiplexes & small apartments in single-family neighbourhoods & that change has been too slow. Listen to the frustration in his voice!
