On a recent trip to Laos, in a tiny village I saw a fisherman sling this around his waist whilst fishing in waist deep water. I found it in the local village shop & it’s now a warm Hong Kong neon lantern in the balcony.

Fair read. Not blown by it. A big fan of Dalrymple’s books but here there are too many possibilities, could be, probabilities, biases (?) for a historical book. Plays it safe in the end without delving much on how history is being rewritten in India today to suit a political ideology. Felt let down.
